For the St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Sioux Falls, the annual collections for the missions always has one core intention: Addressing the needs of the world's poorest of the poor.
"When we contribute to this collection, we are meeting the needs of Jesus, who meets us in the hungry, the thirsty, the homeless and the ill of the world," said Friar Tschakert from the church in an Oct. 11 pamphlet. The collection for the missions took place from Oct. 11-18 this year, which St. Katharine commemorated with Mass services, a video series, Sacraments of Reconciliation and Baptism Preparation Classes.
When contributions are collected during this week, the funds are contributing to the ill, thirsty, hungry and homeless of the world, which St. Katharine feels is a steadfast reminder of this teaching of Jesus: "Whatever you did for the least of my brothers and sisters, you did for me."
The church aspires to help people affected by anything from natural disasters such as hurricanes and drought, to medical emergencies and illness, to victims of war.
"This year almost all countries have been hit at once by the coronavirus pandemic. I can only imagine the needs faced by missionaries in the field who depend on our generosity for assistance," Fr. Tschakert said.
Tschakert said it's important for the Catholic community to remain informed about political issues and candidates as the weeks leading up to the national and state elections fly by. He encourages Catholics to "make their decisions in a serene manner."
"As Christians and Catholics, we are well aware that we do not yet live in the Kingdom that was promised by Jesus and for which we pray each day. We live in a world that is not perfect and, in fact, is often quite a mixture of good and evil. As we make our way through this 'vale of tears,' we do the best we can to work toward the Kingdom, knowing we are not there yet," he said.
The friar said that Christians should keep in mind that, no matter who is elected or what happens thereafter, this is not a final victory.
"Nor do we despair over what we consider failures. Christians have lived through better times and also through much worse times," he said.
The St. Katharine Drexel Parish is located at 1800 S. Katie Ave., Suite #1, Sioux Falls, SD 57106.
