The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling allowing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to continue won praise from Catholic Charities USA.
“While this is a positive step based on procedural concerns, it nonetheless reflects a fundamental humanitarian sensitivity to the plight of these young women and men who know no other home than our country,” the organization said in a statement posted on its website. “We strongly urge Congress to prioritize finding a permanent, bipartisan legislative solution to protect DACA recipients”
Catholic Charities has served DACA residents and their families from the start of the program, the organization said.
“Catholic Charities will continue to work with all immigrants, migrants and refugees as we have for over 100 years,” the organization said.
The Trump administration sought to end the DACA program, which protects immigrants brought to this country as young children from being deported if they graduate from high school or were honorably discharged from the military and if they passed a background check. The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling shared by NPR, allowed the program to continue. Although the administration has the power to stop the program, it did not follow the proper procedure in doing so, the court said.
