Walsh University’s Hoover Historical Center has been added to the Ohio Innovation Trail, a statewide initiative that highlights Ohio's contributions to innovation as part of the America 250 celebration. The trail features more than 80 sites across the state, focusing on industries ranging from sports to household technology. Among these innovations is the modern vacuum cleaner, which was invented in North Canton.
The Hoover Historical Center presents the story of James Murray Spangler and his development of the first electric suction sweeper. The museum also explores The Hoover Company’s growth and its influence on households worldwide. Last year, it attracted 3,000 visitors from 21 states and three countries.
Students enrolled in Walsh University's Museum Studies program gain practical experience at the center by leading tours, helping with events, and supporting research activities related to Hoover’s legacy. This undergraduate program is unique in Ohio for offering hands-on training that prepares students for roles in museums and cultural institutions.
Upcoming events at the center include "Christmas on Hoover Farm" on Sunday, Dec. 7, from 1 to 4 p.m., which will feature complimentary photos with Santa Claus, horse-drawn wagon rides, and a tour of holiday decorations throughout the museum. Regular guided tours are available free of charge from March through October on Thursdays through Saturdays at scheduled times.
