Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS) is offering cemetery plots at a reduced price to the public, following donations from local community members who no longer needed them. The initiative aligns with the Catholic tradition of remembering and praying for the deceased during November, which is dedicated to honoring departed loved ones.
The donated plots are primarily located in the Catholic section of Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home & Cemetery at 6800 S. 14th St. They were initially intended for families unable to afford burial costs. While demand for these donated plots has been limited so far, CSS now plans to make some available at about half the standard market rate.
Ed and Kathleen Holloway benefited from this program when they were searching for burial plots near Kathleen’s parents but found none available until notified by Lincoln Memorial staff that CSS owned suitable nearby plots. Ed Holloway said, “In Luke 12:40, it says, ‘You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.’ Though this passage is a spiritual calling of preparedness for Jesus’ return, my wife and I believe that God aligned CSS in our path of completing our final needs.”
All proceeds from plot sales will go toward supporting CSS programs and services across southern Nebraska.
John Soukup, Development Officer at CSS, encouraged those interested in learning more or purchasing a plot to contact him directly at 402-327-6235. He added: “In this month when we honor the dead, may we also remember that every act of mercy—whether offering a prayer for the departed or helping those in need—bears witness to our faith in the God who promises eternal life.”
