Franciscan University of Steubenville has launched a new Advent Lessons & Carols video series, now available for free on its expanded digital platform, FaithandReason.com. The initiative aims to provide the public with an opportunity to prepare spiritually for the Advent season through Scripture readings, choral music, and meditations.

The series features performances by Franciscan University student ensembles under the direction of Dr. Vincent E. Rone, associate professor of fine arts and director of sacred music at the university. Each segment explores themes from the fall of Adam to the Incarnation.

Dr. Rone explained the purpose behind the project: “The Church gives us the season of Advent as a time to prepare for the Second Coming of Christ and to celebrate the mystery of his birth. Our Advent Lessons & Carols invites the faithful into that preparation with Scripture, prayer, and sacred music that lifts the heart to God,” he said. “We hope it inspires all who watch to enter Christmas with renewed joy and gratitude.”

The tradition of Lessons & Carols began in 19th-century England and is recognized as a way for Christian communities to reflect on hope and preparation during Advent. Franciscan University continues this tradition by offering both digital content and a live event.

The musical selections include pieces such as Ave Maris Stella, Silent Night, We Three Kings, and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing. The series was recorded at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Weirton, West Virginia.

Franciscan University President Father Dave Pivonka, TOR commented on the mission behind this effort: “Advent is a sacred invitation to slow down, listen, and let our hearts be renewed in the hope of Jesus Christ. At Franciscan University, our mission is to help people encounter that hope in a real and personal way,” he said. “Through this Advent Lessons & Carols series, we offer a moment of peace and beauty to anyone longing for the Lord. I pray these Scripture readings and sacred songs draw people everywhere into a deeper awareness of God’s mercy and the incredible love made flesh for us in Jesus Christ.”

In addition to its online offering, Franciscan University will hold its annual live Advent Lessons & Carols service on Friday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m., taking place at Christ the King Chapel. This concert is open to all members of the public at no cost.

The launch of this video series represents another step forward for FaithandReason.com as it expands its resources for Catholic formation and evangelization online.
