More than 100 pro-life organizations, led by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, have addressed a letter to Republican lawmakers in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, urging them to oppose taxpayer funding of abortion through the Affordable Care Act (commonly known as Obamacare).
The letter argues that extending federal subsidies for health insurance plans without including Hyde Amendment protections would increase access to abortion using taxpayer funds. The Hyde Amendment is a legislative provision that bars the use of certain federal funds for abortions except in specific cases.
Pro-life members of Congress have consistently opposed government funding for abortion since the initial debates over the Affordable Care Act, according to the coalition. The groups contend that current law allows for coverage of abortion services and are calling on legislators to ensure that future subsidy extensions do not support such coverage.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, released a statement reiterating her organization’s mission: "Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is a network of more than one million pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders."
The coalition includes 105 organizations seeking congressional action on this issue.
