Holy Cross High School in southwest Louisville has opened a new Early Childhood Center on its campus at 5146 Dixie Highway. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on July 31, with Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre leading the blessing of the facilities, assisted by Father Steven Reeves and Deacon Dennis Nash. Families from the community attended the event.
The center will provide a play-based curriculum that features music, outdoor activities, and nature-based learning. Beth Klem, director of advancement at Holy Cross High School, said, “Holy Cross has made a promise to serve not just the students who walk those halls but to this entire southwest Louisville community. Quality birth-to-three (year old) childcare is an essential component of any healthy community. As a faith-filled community, we commit to walking with these families as they give their children the best start possible.”
The facility occupies a building that once served as housing for the brothers of Holy Cross who taught at Bishop David High School. Bishop David was an all-boys school that operated from 1960 until it closed after the 1983-84 school year. It then merged with Angela Merici High School for girls to form Holy Cross High School at the same location.
“In 1965 the brothers of Holy Cross built this wing of the campus to house the teachers and administrators who taught in this school, and here we are today — 60 years later — still serving the needs of the families in the southwest community,” Klem added.
Renovations for the center were supported by donations from Bill Herp, a Bishop David graduate from 1981, and local nonprofit Shirley’s Way.
