Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President St. John's University-New York | St. John's University-New York
The St. John's Law community is mourning the loss of Hon. Guy J. Mangano, a distinguished alumnus and public servant who made significant contributions to New York's legal landscape and dispute resolution field.
Justice Mangano's career began after his graduation from St. John's Law, where he served as an investigator and assistant counsel for the Joint Legislative Committee in New York State Assembly for Kings County, later working in the State Senate for Kings County. His judicial career included roles in the New York City Family Court, Supreme Court for the Second Judicial District, and as Administrative Judge of the Criminal Term of Kings County Supreme Court. He also served in appellate courts, including being elevated to Presiding Justice in the Appellate Division, Second Department.
Upon retiring from judicial duties, Justice Mangano joined JAMS Arbitration, Mediation and ADR Services in New York. He was a strong advocate for mediation and arbitration as effective conflict resolution methods. To support this belief, he established the Mangano Dispute Resolution Advancement Award at St. John’s Law’s Hugh L. Carey Center for Dispute Resolution. This award annually honors scholars whose empirical research advances understanding of dispute resolution values and skills.
In addition to his professional achievements, Justice Mangano contributed to St. John's Law as an adjunct professor and through events like the Mangano Golf Outing that celebrated his support for his alma mater.
Dean Jelani Jefferson Exum expressed condolences: “Just as Justice Mangano’s deep commitment to public service continues to resonate for New Yorkers, his dedication to St. John’s Law leaves a lasting legacy for our students, alumni, and wider Law School community.” The community extends its sympathies to his family and friends during this time.
