St. John’s University School of Law is mourning the loss of Hon. Charles B. Rangel, a notable alumnus and former U.S. Representative for New York. Dean Jelani Jefferson Exum expressed sorrow on behalf of the law school community for the passing of Congressman Rangel, who was instrumental in serving the public for over four decades.
Congressman Rangel's journey began in Harlem, moving through military service to law school, and eventually into a significant political career. Reflecting on his life experiences, he stated: “As the kid who dropped out of high school, got the Purple Heart, and was trying to get a good law school education, I consistently reflect on how good and generous people have been over the years. I had people that believed in me, and who wanted to see me succeed.”
Rangel became known as the first African American chairman of the House Committee on Ways & Means and co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus. He also played a key role in urban revitalization policies and advocated for educational opportunities.
At St. John’s Law School, he contributed by helping students develop trial advocacy skills as founding president of St. John’s Criminal Law Institute and established a scholarship fund bearing his name to support future generations. He remarked: “Education is a key to upward advancement, and now more than ever, it allows us the opportunity to make better decisions, not only for ourselves but for future generations.”
His contributions were recognized by various honors from St. John's Law School including an accolade at its Diversity and Inclusion Gala.
Dean Jefferson Exum praised him saying: “Congressman Rangel epitomized the St. John’s Lawyer—guided by a strong sense of service and a desire to use his legal education to uplift others." She recalled meeting him at age 10 and appreciated his mentorship throughout her life.
The community extends heartfelt condolences to Congressman Rangel's family and friends as they remember his dedication and generosity.
