Earlier this month, the National Association of Legal Advocacy Educators honored Justin Fuller ’25 as an Academic All-American Trial Advocate. This accolade acknowledges Fuller's exceptional performance in mock trial competitions at St. John’s Law School's Frank S. Polestino Trial Advocacy Institute (PTAI), his leadership role as PTAI’s Executive Director, and his academic success.
Fuller received this recognition during a year when PTAI achieved its highest-ever ranking, reaching fourth place in the 2025 Gavel Rankings for national trial advocacy programs. This marked a significant improvement from last year's position. Fuller credits his achievements to the supportive community within PTAI.
Reflecting on his journey, Fuller recalls being encouraged by Camille Perbost ’24 and career counselors to participate in an internal competition during his first year. Coaches Ashley Purkey ’23 and Victoria Rubino ’23 played pivotal roles in mentoring him through the process. “The thrill of competing solidified my desire to be a courtroom attorney,” Fuller shared.
As he advanced in his studies, Fuller took full advantage of opportunities within PTAI, excelling in both regional and national competitions while serving on the executive board. He emphasized that "PTAI provides the best forums for testing your trial skills against law students from around the country."
In his final year, Fuller co-counseled with second-year students Stephanie Besen, Isaiah Dickerson, and Elizabeth Sack, contributing to their development as advocates. “Having a front row seat to their success was an incredible gift—one I’ll never forget,” he stated.
PTAI also influenced Fuller's career trajectory. His experience was instrumental during interviews with the Legal Aid Society's Homicide Defense Task Force and later for a full-time position with Legal Aid's Criminal Defense Practice. The training he received prepared him well for these opportunities.
This fall, Fuller will begin working full-time at Legal Aid, fulfilling his aspiration of advocating for New Yorkers facing legal challenges. He remains appreciative of PTAI’s impact on his education and future career: “It can be life changing.”
