Bishop Lawrence J. Sullivan, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Chicago, is set to ordain two new priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago on Saturday, May 17, 2025. The ceremony will take place at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago and will be available via livestream on the archdiocese’s YouTube channel.
Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, remarked on the significance of this event: “In a time often marked by turmoil and suffering, priests offer hope, stability and a reminder of the eternal truth and love found in Christ. Their witness shows that a life rooted in faith and self-giving can transform not only individuals but entire communities.”
The ordination ceremony marks the culmination of extensive preparation for these men through the Sacrament of Holy Orders. This process involves significant responsibilities such as celebrating Mass, offering forgiveness through Reconciliation, preaching the Gospel, and administering other sacraments like Baptism and Matrimony. Priests also commit to lifelong celibacy and obedience to their bishop.
The newly ordained priests have undergone over six years of formation including studies in philosophy, Catholic theology, Church history, and pastoral practice. They have also gained practical experience working in parishes, schools, and hospitals.
Cristian Garcia from Chicago will begin his ministry at St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Rolling Meadows and Mount Prospect. His first Masses are scheduled for May 17 at Our Lady of Czestochowa site in Cicero and May 18 at Our Lady of Charity site.
Kevin Menard from Arlington Heights will serve at St. John Cantius Parish in Chicago with his first Mass planned for May 18 at St. John Cantius.
