A workshop aimed at equipping Catholic educators with strategies to support students with ADHD and executive function challenges was held by the Institute for Catholic Schools (ICS) at St. John’s University on May 10. The event, known as the ADHD Executive Function Workshop, was led by Bonni S. Cohen, Ed.D., a nationally recognized ADHD parent coach and teacher trainer.
Dr. Cohen's session focused on the connection between ADHD and executive function skills, which are essential cognitive processes that affect learning, behavior, and motivation in students. Participants explored eight core executive function skills and discussed how deficits in these areas can impact classroom performance.
The workshop offered practical strategies to enhance student engagement and improve both structured and unstructured learning environments. Emphasis was placed on creating low-stress classroom settings that promote attention, participation, and academic success for all learners.
Robert A. DiNardo, Director of the Institute for Catholic Schools, highlighted the value of the workshop: “Dr. Cohen is an expert on ADHD and Executive Function Disorder and her presentation was found to be very beneficial to the educators who attended." He affirmed that St. John’s would continue hosting similar professional development events.
DiNardo added that "the ICS remains committed to offering relevant and high-impact learning opportunities that reflect the needs of today’s Catholic educators and students," noting future events will focus on inclusive practices, student-centered strategies, and strengthening school communities across the region.
