The Most Rev. Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, recently administered the Sacraments of Initiation to 19 members of the St. John's University community. The ceremony took place at St. Thomas More Church on the university's Queens campus on April 27.
Bishop Brennan addressed the candidates with a message of pride and encouragement: "What a delight it is to be here and celebrate with those who are either beginning or completing the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist."
The candidates had participated in a year-long program through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), previously known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. This process is open to non-Catholics and Catholics who have not received all the Sacraments of Initiation as children.
During his homily, Bishop Brennan emphasized the significance of community and faith, describing the Mass as "an ecclesial moment—a moment of being Church." He spoke about solidarity in faith and referenced words from Pope Francis at World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon: “Pope Francis spoke words that are so encouraging for all of us, but particularly for you who are completing the Sacraments.”
Several candidates shared personal stories about their journeys to receiving these sacraments. Emily Florea, a Childhood Education major, expressed gratitude for completing her final sacrament. Raqib Alam, studying Government and Politics, reflected on his long-standing desire to join the Church since age 15. Carmen Collins, a doctoral candidate in Multi-Sector Communication, recounted how her experience with illness deepened her connection to Catholicism.
Bishop Brennan acknowledged St. John's University's role in nurturing these commitments: “This community has produced this fruit. Thank you, St. John’s, for your witness.”
The event marked an important milestone for participants as they embraced their faith more fully within the Catholic Church.
