Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
Bishop Brendan J. Cahill of the Diocese of Victoria will honor National Maritime Day and the Catholic Church's observance of the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Sea on May 22. The Catholic Church's maritime apostolate, "Stella Maris" (Star of the Sea), supports individuals involved with sea-based occupations. This includes various maritime workers such as merchants, sailors, seafarers, fishermen, and port personnel, whose roles are essential to the functioning of global trade.
Maritime work often entails significant sacrifices, with those involved frequently isolated from the broader community. In response, Stella Maris chaplains, deacons, and lay ministers offer support to these workers and their families across U.S. ports.
Bishop Cahill commented, "On National Maritime Day, we thank our brothers and sisters who work as seafarers for their dedication. We also seek the intercession of Our Lady, Star of the Sea -- that she protect and guide those in this important industry that is vital to global commerce."
In recognition of National Maritime Day, Bishop Cahill is urging dioceses throughout the United States to honor seafarers during Mass and consider organizing events to acknowledge their contributions.
In Washington, D.C., Bishop Cahill is set to conduct the Votive Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Star of the Sea, on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 12:10 p.m. This will take place in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
Additionally, Pope Francis has declared 2025 as the Holy Year, dedicated to renewing the spirit as "Pilgrims of Hope." As part of this observance, the Italian naval ship Amerigo Vespucci has been designated a Jubilee church and pilgrimage site, enabling seafarers to participate in the Holy Year celebrations. A pilgrimage to this ship allows participants to obtain a plenary indulgence. More details on the Amerigo Vespucci can be found through the Catholic News Service.
