Father Andrew Schwenka and Father Joseph Wahlmeier, priests studying in Rome from the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln, reacted to the April 21 passing of Pope Francis. Father Schwenka recounted the moment, "I learned about the Holy Father's death when I went downstairs to get a mid-morning cup of coffee."

Despite news of the Pope's condition slowly improving, the reports of his death spread swiftly, as Father Wahlmeier noted, "word spread fairly quickly that morning from texts from other priests, news alerts, and finally the tolling bells of Rome."

The priests found solace in prayer, recalling Pope Francis' request, "Do not forget... pray for me!" They joined the public in St. Peter's Square for a rosary to honor the Holy Father. Father Schwenka remarked on the timing of the Pope's death, "The Holy Father passed on Easter Monday, just after celebrating the Lord’s Resurrection—during the Jubilee of Hope."

Hannah Theisen also shared her experience, having witnessed the Pope's final appearance, "I was overwhelmed with deep joy and gratitude — but also a profound sense of sorrow." Theisen had seen Pope Francis during Easter celebrations in St. Peter’s Square. She recalled the Pope's frail condition yet willingness to bless the crowds. Following his death, Rome entered a state of mourning, with a "sense of stillness" amid the busy city.

Others reflected on their past experiences with Pope Francis. Father James Morin remembered the night Pope Francis was elected, emphasizing the impact of the moment of silence he requested. Father Morin also recalled meetings with the Pope, finding his openness to spontaneous questions notable.

Father Brian Kane shared his reflections on the Pope’s words during a visit to Philadelphia in 2015. He remembered the Pope encouraging priests to be "shepherds with the smell of sheep."

Father Matthew Schilmoeller, an assistant pastor, recounted humorous and meaningful encounters with the Pope during his time in Rome as a seminarian.

Lauren Gage described receiving a blessing from Pope Francis during her honeymoon, highlighting the Pope's enduring joy and commitment despite his health challenges. Her husband, newly confirmed at the time, was moved by the Pope's interaction with the newlywed couples.

The community reflects on the spiritual legacy of Pope Francis, honoring his dedication to the Church and his encouragement through personal struggles.
