Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., the Archbishop of Newark, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis. In a statement, Cardinal Tobin acknowledged Pope Francis as a shepherd closely connected to God's people. He characterized the Pontiff as "a man of deep faith, profound humility, and unshakable hope," whose dedication to the poor and marginalized will inspire the Church for future generations.

During the Easter season, Cardinal Tobin emphasized the faith that "Christ is risen and death is not the end," entrusting Pope Francis to the "risen Lord whom he followed so faithfully." He prayed that Christ would "welcome him into the fullness of joy and peace."

Cardinal Tobin also urged the community to "give thanks for his life, his witness, and his love for the People of God." He called on the faithful to honor Pope Francis's memory by building a Church that embodies the qualities of Jesus, being "merciful, welcoming, and always near to those on the margins."
