As the Easter Sunday approaches, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. shares thoughts on the significance of the resurrection of Jesus. Cardinal Tobin emphasizes the transformative nature of the resurrection story, highlighting the transition of fear into faith among the early disciples.
"Imagine the disciples arriving at the empty tomb, their hearts heavy with sorrow. They did not expect what they found," Tobin says. The narrative of Easter underscores the ever-present love of God, even amidst uncertainty and suffering. "The resurrection is not just a past event; it is the foundation of our faith," he adds. This message stresses that hopelessness is not the final word and that hope prevails.
Cardinal Tobin draws parallels between Christmas and Easter, noting both celebrate God's boundless love. “While Christmas reveals the gift of Christ's birth, Easter proclaims the triumph of life over sin and death.” The joy of the Easter season, which lasts for fifty days, begins with the Easter Vigil, when the Church administers the life-giving sacraments of initiation: baptism, confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist.
This year, approximately 1,300 individuals will receive these sacraments in the Archdiocese, marking their formal entry into the faith. As communities gather to observe this sacred time, Tobin expresses a hope that Christ's love fills hearts with the joy of the resurrection.
"May this Easter bring renewed faith, a constant hope, and endless love for you and your loved ones," Cardinal Tobin concludes, offering blessings and peace to all.
