Five years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of the Archdiocese of Newark has revisited his 2020 reflections on the Stations of the Cross. Addressing the faithful, Cardinal Tobin emphasized the continuing relevance of the reflections, which were originally intended as a response to the widespread suffering and fear caused by the pandemic.

In his message, Cardinal Tobin highlighted ongoing global challenges, including economic hardship, isolation, racism, and war, urging believers to view the Stations of the Cross as a means of solidarity with Christ and with suffering individuals worldwide.

According to Cardinal Tobin, the reflections and prayers of St. Alphonsus Liguori remain a source of hope during difficult times. Quoting Pope Francis, who offered a prayer on Good Friday in 2019, the Cardinal encouraged the faithful to consider the global and personal trials faced today as they reflect on the Way of the Cross.

Cardinal Tobin prayed, "Lord Jesus, revive in us the hope of resurrection and of your definitive victory over all evil and all death. Amen!" He invited the faithful to join him in prayer, promising to remember them and their loved ones.

In his concluding message, Cardinal Tobin reaffirmed his commitment to the faithful, "Sincerely yours in Christ the Redeemer, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Newark."

The reflections cover all 14 traditional stations, each prefaced by an antiphon, followed by a meditation and a brief reflection by Cardinal Tobin. These reflections aim to address the reality of human suffering, drawing parallels between Jesus's journey and the contemporary struggles faced by humanity.

Further, the Cardinal invoked the intercession of the Virgin Mary, urging believers to seek her support and help during times of crisis. He also reflected on the images associated with the stations, such as Jesus being stripped of his garments and his encounter with Veronica, correlating them with current global issues.

As the world continues to navigate the aftermath of the pandemic and its persistent challenges, the liturgical reflections offer spiritual solace and hope for those seeking meaning amid suffering.
