Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of Newark has revisited his reflections from five years ago during the 2020 Holy Week, when he offered a version of the Stations of the Cross as a response to the coronavirus pandemic. Cardinal Tobin acknowledges that while the immediate effects of the pandemic have subsided, many people continue to face challenges such as economic hardship, racism, and injustice.

He invites the faithful to read his original pandemic-related reflections in the context of the ongoing global issues. The concept of the Stations of the Cross is emphasized as a pilgrimage with Jesus, symbolic of a shared journey with the suffering Christ. He refers to meditations by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, which provide solace during difficult times.

The Cardinal includes a "Message from Pope Francis," a prayer delivered at the Good Friday service at the Colosseum in 2019. According to the Cardinal, this prayer encourages believers to see all human suffering in the light of Christ’s sacrifice.

Throughout the text, Cardinal Tobin reflects on each of the fourteen traditional Stations of the Cross. The reflections incorporate lessons and prayers relevant to both the COVID-19 pandemic and broader issues affecting mankind today.

Cardinal Tobin concludes by asking readers to pray along with him using this traditional devotion, affirming his memory of the community and requesting prayers in return.
