Holy Trinity Church has launched a new chapter of Stephen Ministry, providing support for parishioners facing personal crises. This initiative involves trained peers offering emotional and spiritual assistance. Terry Lesch, involved in establishing the ministry at the church, described the role of a Stephen Minister as someone who provides "emotional support, spiritual support, and active listening," walking alongside individuals in crisis.

Stephen Ministries, a national non-profit established in 1975, provides training and resources on topics like caring ministry and grief support, as stated on its website. The organization now reaches about 13,000 parishes.

At Holy Trinity, 14 parishioners underwent a five-month training and were commissioned by their pastor, Father Shayne Duvall, on February 9. “I love the fact that it was an idea that came from the people," Father Duvall said, emphasizing the grassroots nature of the ministry's inception.

Parishioners face diverse challenges, from grief to illness. Lesch explained that Stephen Ministry does not substitute therapy, but focuses on active listening, enabling individuals to navigate personal decisions. The initiative remains confidential, she emphasized.

Father Duvall acknowledged the difficulties parishioners endure, highlighting the essence of vulnerability in seeking support. Initially, two parishioners have been identified as needing assistance.

Effective pairing is crucial, as personal connections between ministers and receivers are generally avoided. Father Duvall expressed pride in the parishioners’ commitment, noting, “They want to be the face, hands, feet, and voice of Christ.”

Further information about Stephen Ministry is available at their website.
