Ed Harpring, a longtime sidewalk counselor, recently reflected on his decades-long involvement in pro-life ministry outside the EMW Women’s Surgical Center in Louisville. He was present when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, an event that marked a significant moment for him after years of advocating against abortion.
Harpring spent nearly 40 years counseling women outside the center, which operated from 1981 until its closure in 2022 following the court's decision. "It was especially moving" to be there when the decision was announced, he said.
His work involved offering alternatives to abortion and directing women to local support services. Harpring shared that he encountered many distressed women who felt abortion was their only option. However, some chose to have their babies after receiving counsel from him.
Recalling a memorable encounter, Harpring mentioned a woman who named her son Edward as a tribute to him after choosing life for her child. “That makes you realize it is worthwhile," he said.
The surgical center closed following the Supreme Court's ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which returned abortion law decisions to individual states and led to an effective ban in Kentucky.
Looking forward, Harpring emphasized ongoing efforts needed in supporting women facing crisis pregnancies. He highlighted initiatives like "40 Days for Life" and encouraged involvement with pregnancy resource centers and maternity homes.
“Another powerful way to get involved” is through parish groups such as Walking with Moms in Need, where members provide personal support to mothers who choose life but face difficulties along the way.
