St. John’s University recently hosted a Sport Management Career Night on its Queens, NY campus, attracting a significant turnout of students and alumni. The event was organized by the Division of Sport Management.

David P. Hedlund, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Chair of the Division of Sport Management at The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies, noted the impressive attendance: “We haven’t seen attendance like this since 2017 or 2018,” he said. “I was happy to see such a large population of students. We want to facilitate as many connections as possible.”

The event featured 20 speakers connected to St. John’s University in various professional capacities, including roles in professional sports teams, athletic departments, and youth sports.

Michael Fahid ’01Ed, ’13MS, Assistant Dean at The Peter J. Tobin College of Business and an Adjunct Professor in the Division of Sport Management, expressed his satisfaction with the event: “I loved it,” he said. “Bringing together people of all ages and creating a strong diversity of speakers and students made a big difference.” He emphasized the importance of networking for students: “It shows how many students care about making connections and networking,” Fahid added. “It also shows how St. John’s cares about its students and their future careers.”

This year's event adopted a "speaker rotation" format where each speaker engaged with different groups every seven or eight minutes. Joseph Pellumbi ’23CCPS praised this approach: “Rotating speakers can be more beneficial than having long lines of students waiting to talk to specific people,” he said. He also highlighted the opportunity for student networking.

Pellumbi shared his personal experience with attendees: “The St. John’s Sport Management program was very committed to providing me with the skills, tools, and knowledge needed for me to succeed.”
