Parishes across the nation are adopting a new approach to preparing individuals for entry into the Catholic Church. The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is a year-round process that invites all parishioners, not just leaders and catechists, to participate in the formation journey.
Laura Zoeller, the Archdiocese of Louisville’s consultant for adult formation and initiation, emphasized that "we are all responsible for those who want to enter into the faith." She explained that OCIA "is meant to involve the entire parish," encouraging catechumens—unbaptized individuals preparing for sacraments—to engage in parish life through service and ongoing adult formation.
Zoeller highlighted the importance of parishioners accompanying catechumens on their spiritual journey. Dr. DeKarlos Blackmon, vice chancellor for pastoral services for the Archdiocese of Louisville, described OCIA as an evangelizing opportunity for both newcomers and existing church members. He noted that active Catholics should consider how they can better accompany and welcome others.
Blackmon urged Catholics to see interactions with new church members as a chance to be "re-evangelized themselves" rather than merely going through routine practices. He expressed hope that this process would serve as a "springboard for everyone" into deeper participation in church life.
