St. John's Law School's peer-to-peer tutoring program is now in its third year, offering essential support to students across various subjects. With over 30 tutors available, the program covers around 20 courses ranging from foundational 1L classes to advanced topics like Professional Responsibility and Federal Income Tax.

The initiative is led by Kathryn Piper, Senior Director of Academic Achievement at St. John’s Law. She explains, “I recognized that students needed substantive help across several courses, preferably from human beings who had figured out how to do well in those courses recently at this school.” Piper emphasizes the dual benefit of the program: providing academic support while fostering a collaborative community culture.

Piper introduces the program early to first-year students and actively promotes it as a valuable resource for all. Tutors are selected based on eligibility criteria and can apply directly or through faculty recommendations.

“One of the great things about having an established program now is that people who have been tutored want to become tutors themselves,” Piper notes. She highlights a trend where second-year students express interest in becoming tutors after benefiting from the program during their first year.

Jonathan Schloth ’25, a tutor for multiple subjects, appreciates the opportunity to engage with fellow students and refine his own understanding of law school material. He states, “Tutoring has also allowed me to become more organized in understanding law school subject matter.”

Riki Markowitz ’25 echoes similar sentiments about her tutoring experience. She finds value in explaining complex material in relatable ways and cherishes the connections made through tutoring. “I've gotten the chance to meet amazing students who I likely wouldn't have met otherwise,” she says.

The peer-to-peer tutoring program at St. John’s Law continues to be a significant asset for both tutors and tutees, enhancing learning experiences and building professional networks within the student community.
