Dr. Lurene Kelley, the Director of Academic Support at Christian Brothers University (CBU), is focused on addressing barriers to student success. Since joining CBU in April 2019, Dr. Kelley has been instrumental in launching the university's online learning program and now oversees a team dedicated to supporting students facing academic challenges.
“They’re trying to be college students and have experiences outside the classroom, too,” said Dr. Kelley. She emphasizes understanding students' lives beyond academics to provide comprehensive support.
The Office of Academic Support serves over half of CBU's undergraduate population through various programs. These include Academic Success Plans for students on academic probation or those seeking better performance, accommodations for students with disabilities, Dreamer Services, and the First Year Experience program that pairs freshmen with peer mentors.
Dr. Kelley’s commitment is recognized by colleagues like Wilson Phillips from Student Affairs: “Dr. Kelley’s commitment to her students is unmatched: attentive, supportive, and dedicated.”
Her approach involves being a resource for students who are unsure where to seek help. “We are the clearinghouse when students don’t know where to go,” said Dr. Kelley, acknowledging that many students juggle responsibilities beyond their studies.
Sometimes solutions are straightforward but require guidance or creative thinking from experienced staff like Dr. Kelley. She suggests practical adjustments such as changing class schedules or managing work hours to fit individual circumstances better.
Dr. Kelley was drawn to CBU by its focus on student well-being and the Lasallian mission of education that respects all persons equally. Her educational background includes attending Catholic institutions like Gonzaga University.
“One of the biggest things that I really like about CBU and the Lasallian mission is this sense of walking with the student,” she explained.
Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Jack Hargett praised her dedication: “With a committed focus on individual student success planning, Lurene truly embodies what it means to be a Lasallian educator.”
Before joining CBU, Dr. Kelley's career included roles as a television reporter and professor at the University of Memphis, along with managing communications for Shelby County Public Defender’s office.
“College is not just about getting a degree,” she stated, highlighting personal growth as an essential part of higher education.
Dr. Kelley's office is located in Buckman Hall at CBU.
