Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop | Diocese of Honolulu

Last July, the National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis offered a memorable experience for attendees. Among them was a bishop who shared two significant moments from the event. The first occurred in a stadium with about 50,000 people present. As music began and the Blessed Sacrament was processed into the venue, an immediate silence fell over the crowd, all focusing on the presence of Jesus.

The second moment took place during a Eucharistic Procession through Indianapolis streets. Participants were organized into groups: women and men religious, priests, and bishops. As each group emerged, they were greeted with cheers from the street crowds. Reflecting on this experience, the bishop thought, “This must be what entering heaven is like! The throngs of the friends of Jesus are there to joyfully greet you as you enter.”

These experiences serve as reminders of one's ultimate destiny and provide strength during difficult times. The Church selected the Gospel of the Transfiguration for the Second Sunday of Lent to highlight this theme. It recounts how Jesus took his disciples Peter, John, and James to witness his glory alongside Moses and Elijah. This moment aimed to prepare them for future trials.

In life, many face darkness such as depression or grief. Remembering brighter days can offer hope during these times. Gathering at communal tables of remembrance allows individuals to encounter teachings from scriptures and see Jesus's brilliance through faith.

“We are here on the mountaintop whenever we come to this table of remembrance,” noted the bishop in his homily for Lent's Second Sunday. This gathering offers strength to face life's challenges by remembering Jesus's love and joy.
