The Diocese of Orlando marked a significant event on March 9, 2025, as over 800 individuals were recognized as "Elect" in two separate ceremonies at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe. Bishop John Noonan expressed his enthusiasm for this development, stating, “When you have people coming into the Church, wanting Christ in their life and to serve, that is the most joyful celebration we can have.”

This trend is not isolated to Central Florida. Nick Wagner from Team Initiation noted similar increases in France and Belgium, with growth rates between 31% and 50%. In Los Angeles, there was a reported 38% increase in OCIA enrollments since 2016. Wagner attributes this surge to factors such as a search for meaning and community post-pandemic.

Isabel Fernandez from the diocesan office observed an almost 200-person increase in sacramental receptions across parishes. She linked this rise partly to the spiritual effects of COVID-19, noting families are prioritizing sacraments after confronting mortality.

Father Angel García from Holy Cross Parish shared his hopes for these new catechumens: “(During the Rite of Election), Bishop (Noonan) calls forward each of the catechumens and they’re elected and their names are inscribed in the Book of the Elect,” he said.

María Falcón at Holy Redeemer Parish spoke about her experience ministering to new elects: “It’s been an incredible experience. Many have come since October of last year telling me, ‘María, I want to get baptized.’” Jorge Montes from St. Thomas Aquinas emphasized accompaniment in guiding families through sacraments.

Carlos Rivera decided to be baptized before convalidating his marriage within the church. Yahir Humberto Rivera credited his fiancée's faith for drawing him towards Catholicism. Juan Junior Algarin found solace and purpose after military service through attending Mass at Holy Redeemer.

Ellis D., a young parishioner facing illness, sought closeness with God during challenging times: “I wanted to do this because I want to be closer to God,” he said.

Ronald Smith transitioned from Southern Baptist roots to Catholicism after years attending Mass with his wife. At Holy Family Parish in Orlando, Manuel Castañeda cited social media and apologetics programs as factors contributing to increased interest in Catholicism amid societal secularization.

Luis Nieves highlighted ongoing spiritual renewal: “We’re definitely seeing the Jubilee Year of Hope happening as the Holy Spirit is inspiring people.”
