The Villa Marie Eagles basketball team has earned a spot in the state games following their performance at the Special Olympics East Central Regional Basketball 3-on-3 tournament held in Grand Island. The team consists of students from Villa Marie Home and School for Exceptional Children located in Waverly.
Head Coach Matt Jilek expressed satisfaction with the team's initial game against Beatrice, which they won 24-10. "Our first game was against Beatrice; we won 24-10," said Jilek. "We played with great heart and discipline."
Coach Greg Gibney highlighted the contribution of all players during this victory, stating, "It was nice that every player had at least two buckets in that win. The smiles on their faces were just priceless."
This early success propelled the Eagles into a competitive championship matchup against the Lincoln Southeast Knights. The close contest ended with a narrow victory for the Eagles, secured only in the final 30 seconds of play.
"That game was a battle," noted Jilek. "We matched up very well, and our players never quit. Happily, we escaped with a 30-28 victory."
Recalling the decisive moments, Coach Gibney mentioned, "We called timeout in the last minute and told the players, 'great teams will find a way,' and they did."
With this triumph behind them, coaches, players, and supporters are preparing for the upcoming state basketball games in April where they will compete against Nebraska’s top Special Olympics teams.
Jilek emphasized the significance of their journey: "The squad’s journey is a testament to their hard work and spirit, inspiring the community every step of the way."
