Revered Carl A. Kemme, D.D. Bishop | Diocese of Witchita
Bishop Carl A Kemme has issued a message to the faithful of the Diocese of Wichita as they enter the Lenten season. The bishop's message, delivered on Ash Wednesday, encourages reflection and renewal through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
"Today, we enter the sacred season of Lent, beginning with this solemn day of Ash Wednesday," Bishop Kemme stated. He highlighted the significance of receiving ashes and hearing the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” emphasizing humility and dependence on God.
Lent is described by Bishop Kemme as "a season of grace," offering an opportunity for individuals to pause from daily life and assess their spiritual state. He encourages spending time in quiet reflection, scripture reading, and participation in sacraments like Eucharist and reconciliation during these 40 days.
Bishop Kemme spoke about fasting as a means to detach from distractions and open oneself to God's presence. Almsgiving was mentioned as a way to practice Christian charity by focusing on those in need.
"I invite you to reflect on this question: What is God asking of me this Lent?" Bishop Kemme asked his congregation. He suggested that God might be calling individuals towards greater trust or reconciliation with others.
The bishop concluded with a hope for renewal during Lent: "May this Lenten season be a time of true renewal for all of us, as individuals, as families, and as a diocese."
Bishop Kemme assured his prayers for the faithful: "Be assured of my prayers for you, and may God bless you abundantly."
