Bob Sullivan, an attorney from Wahoo and a columnist for Catholic publications, has joined forces with John Soukup to launch a new radio program on Spirit Catholic Radio called "In Layman's Terms." The show is designed to engage men by focusing on topics relevant to them. Sullivan, who has been writing the column "In Layman's Terms" since 2017, envisioned a radio program as a way to reach this audience.
The idea took shape when Sullivan attended a men's silent retreat in late 2023 and discussed it with Soukup, whom he met there. Soukup brings extensive experience in radio as a former KVSS-Lincoln station manager and current host of the podcast "Hope in the Good Life."
Initially, they produced pilot episodes together, but Soukup found managing multiple roles challenging. He decided to focus solely on producing while Sullivan hosted. However, Jeb Eschied, Spirit Catholic Radio's program director, noted that co-hosting added depth to the show. Consequently, Soukup returned as co-host with additional production support provided by the station.
Sullivan expressed comfort with this arrangement: “I feel a lot more comfortable with John co-hosting. He has the perfect radio voice, years of experience, and a strong understanding of the faith.”
While primarily aimed at Catholic men, Soukup emphasizes that women can also benefit from listening: “Everyone is welcome to tune in and consider the insights, discussions, and encouragement offered on ‘In Layman’s Terms.’”
The program features various guests such as Dan Donaldson of Heroic Men and Father Ed Hopkins of Regnum Christi. Local figures like Father Matthew Schilmoeller have also appeared.
Both hosts appreciate radio's accessibility and value Spirit Catholic Radio as an important local resource. Sullivan remarked on its impact: “When we hear our neighbor talking about our shared faith in a powerful and compelling way, we all grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ.”
Soukup finds personal growth through these broadcasts: “There have been so many times when I turn on the station and hear something that I needed to hear at that moment.”
"In Layman's Terms" airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m., rebroadcasting Sundays at 6 p.m. As part of this endeavor, Sullivan is adapting his column to better reach men.
“We’ve been blessed to have Catholic media as a powerful voice of truth in a sea of confusion,” he said.
Sullivan concludes by asking for prayers for their mission: “We just ask for prayers in our mission to do God’s will through ‘In Layman’s Terms’ and always be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”
“What a great time to be a Catholic!” said Sullivan.
