The Office of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Newark has announced the permanent closure of Immaculate Conception High School (ICHS) in Montclair, New Jersey. The school will close on June 30, 2025, marking the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.

This decision follows an extensive review process and was influenced by declining enrollment numbers, financial difficulties, and issues with the aging facility. Despite efforts to keep the school operational, these challenges have made it unsustainable to continue.

Barbara Dolan, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, expressed regret over the decision: “We deeply regret the necessity of this decision and understand the profound impact it will have on our students, families, faculty and staff.” She highlighted ICHS's long-standing role in providing a faith-based education that has impacted many lives. Dolan added that their focus is now on supporting students and families through this transition while honoring ICHS’s legacy.

To assist with this transition, an informational meeting will be held for students and parents to discuss alternative educational options and resources available for the next academic year.

Immaculate Conception High School was founded a century ago by the Sisters of Charity. It has been a key institution in Montclair's Catholic education scene, known for its tradition of academic excellence and leadership. Although its closure marks an end to its physical presence, its legacy is expected to continue through its alumni and community contributions.

The Archdiocese is committed to providing support during this transition period. Efforts will be made to help place students and staff in other Catholic or private schools within the region.
