Archbishop Allen Vigneron | Archdiocese of Detriot

Pope Francis has named Bishop Edward J. Weisenburger as the new Archbishop of Detroit, succeeding Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron. The announcement marks a significant transition for the Archdiocese of Detroit, which serves over 900,000 Catholics across 213 parishes.

Archbishop-elect Weisenburger is set to be installed at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament on March 18. He will lead Vespers at Sacred Heart Major Seminary the day before his installation. As he steps into his new role, Weisenburger expressed gratitude and commitment to serving the community: "The Archdiocese of Detroit is a Church steeped in rich history, vibrant ministries, and known for a committed clergy with a great passion for evangelization. I am humbled to be called to serve such a noble Church."

Archbishop Vigneron submitted his resignation upon reaching the age of 75, as required by Church law. He will remain as apostolic administrator until Weisenburger's installation and will celebrate a farewell Mass on March 9. Reflecting on his tenure, Vigneron stated: "I count myself blessed by God, far beyond what I deserve, to have served for these past sixteen years as the principal pastor of the archdiocese."

Archbishop-elect Weisenburger brings extensive experience from various roles within the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City and as Bishop of Salina and Tucson. His leadership positions include involvement with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and other national organizations.

Vigneron welcomed Weisenburger warmly: “On behalf of all the people of God in the Archdiocese of Detroit...I extend to Archbishop-elect Weisenburger a heartfelt welcome to his new home.”

The press conference introducing Archbishop-elect Weisenburger will be held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary today and livestreamed due to space limitations.

The Archdiocese was established in 1833 by Pope Gregory XVI and elevated in 1937 by Pope Pius XI.
