Pope Francis has issued a message for the World Day of the Sick, which is observed on February 11. He encourages people to find hope and healing even in times of illness and suffering. According to Pope Francis, illness can be an opportunity to experience God's closeness and compassion. He stated, “God does not abandon us and often amazes us by granting us a strength that we never expected and would never have found on our own.”

The Pope emphasizes that suffering allows individuals to hear God's voice and recognize His presence alongside them. It also provides opportunities for meaningful connections. “How often, at the bedside of the sick, do we learn to hope! How often, by our closeness to those who suffer, do we learn to have faith! How often, when we care for those in need, do we discover love!” he said.

This year's message resonates with the legacy of St. Marianne Cope, known for her compassionate care for leprosy patients in Hawaii. Her work laid the foundation for modern caregiving systems like Franciscan Vistas in ʻEwa and Hale O Meleana in Liliha. These programs offer services such as independent living and hospice care while embodying St. Marianne’s spirit of compassion.

In Hawaii, examples of this spirit include the Holy Trinity Parish cancer support group in East Honolulu and HOPE Services Hawaii's outreach teams on the Big Island. Ann Jones from the Holy Trinity Parish group reflects on their gatherings: “Sharing our friendship and faith is powerful.”

Pope Francis describes this collective effort as “a hymn to human dignity, a song of hope,” inviting everyone to participate. For more details on his message, visit www.humandevelopment.va.
