Most Rev. Austin A. Vetter Bishop | Diocese of Helena
Rev. John William Robertson passed away on February 4, 2025, in Helena, Montana. Born on July 30, 1945, in Melbourne, Florida, he was the son of John Howard (Jack) and Elizabeth Jane Robertson. His early years were spent near the Banana River Naval Air Station where his father served as a flight instructor during World War II. After the war, the family moved back to their ranch near Judith Gap, Montana.
Robertson attended elementary school in Judith Gap and graduated as valedictorian from Harlowton High School in 1963. He pursued higher education at Carroll College with a degree in Philosophy before entering St. Thomas the Apostle Seminary in Kenmore, Washington. He was ordained into the Catholic priesthood on June 8, 1971.
Throughout his career with the Diocese of Helena, Fr. Robertson held numerous positions including Vice Chancellor and Judicial Vicar among others. His service extended to several parishes including Holy Spirit Parish in Butte and St. Mary Catholic Community in Helena.
Fr. Robertson's commitment to his work continued even after he began Senior Status in 2020 until his passing. Known for his knowledge of diocesan history and reassuring presence, he left a lasting impact on both colleagues and parishioners.
He is survived by siblings Howard Robertson of Judith Gap; Kathleen Elliott and Tom Robertson of Harlowton; Rita Robertson of Big Fork; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A vigil service will be held at 6 p.m., February 12 at the Cathedral of St. Helena followed by Mass on February 13 at noon.
