For the 37th year, accounting students from Franciscan University of Steubenville are providing free tax preparation and e-filing services to Ohio Valley residents. This initiative is part of the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which targets low- to moderate-income taxpayers.

Starting February 17, 2025, trained student volunteers will offer assistance at the Fort Steuben Mall near center court in the main entrance corridor of the former Claire’s Boutique. The service will be available through April 12, 2025.

Students participating in this program have undergone extensive training, including a course in individual income tax and IRS certification exams. They are equipped to handle federal Form 1040 and related schedules, as well as assist with various tax credits. The service is available for those filing Ohio state tax returns as full-year residents.

However, certain individuals are not eligible for this service. Those with incomes exceeding $70,000 or dealing with specific forms such as Form 1095-A or forms related to miscellaneous income are excluded. Local tax preparation services are also not offered.

The choice of location and schedule reflects the ongoing growth and accessibility of the program for local residents.

Franciscan University's VITA program exemplifies its commitment to educating students for professional achievement and community service. Residents in the Ohio Valley are encouraged to utilize this free resource for their tax needs.
