Pope Francis has announced the theme for the Jubilee Year 2025 as "Pilgrims of Hope." This theme emphasizes hope as a central mission of the Catholic Church, aiming to share God's love through encounters with Christ, particularly with those facing difficult circumstances. The Jubilee Year officially begins on Christmas Eve with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, followed by a midnight Mass led by Pope Francis. He will also open a Jubilee Holy Door on December 26 at Rome's Rebibbia prison.

In his message for the Jubilee, Pope Francis highlighted the importance of compassionate actions and pastoral closeness to all people, including prisoners, the poor, the sick, and migrants fleeing violence. Reflecting on this theme, he stated: “I think of prisoners who, deprived of their freedom, daily feel the harshness of detention, its restrictions, and lack of affection.” His message to marginalized individuals echoes his 2023 Christmas address: “Christ is born for you! Rejoice...God offers you His outstretched hand.”

A recent event that embodied this spirit was held at the Women’s Correctional Community Center (WCCC) in Oahu. The annual Star Light, Star Bright Christmas celebration was organized by Pūʻā Foundation and supported by the Diocese of Honolulu. Volunteers from across Hawaii came together to create a day of 'Ohana Christmas sharing for incarcerated women. Families were reunited in an emotional gathering that included breakfast provided by St. George's parish volunteers and activities like puppet shows and hula performances.

Bishop Larry Silva blessed a luncheon prepared by a former inmate who now owns a catering business. Another speaker shared her journey from incarceration to becoming a college graduate and community leader. The event offered families three-and-a-half hours to enjoy games and quality time together.

This celebration serves as a reminder of how Christmas can bring healing and unity among families through God's love. It highlights how shared vulnerability can transform into hope—a guiding light during challenging times.
