Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville

Sister Marguerite "Peggy" Fowkes, a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, passed away on November 28 at the age of 90. She was in her 67th year of religious life. Born in Boston, Sister Fowkes dedicated her life to education and community service across Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Ohio.

In Louisville's Archdiocese, she worked as a librarian at St. Joseph School in Bardstown and at St. Pius X and Our Lady of Mount Carmel schools in Louisville. Her contributions extended beyond teaching; she served as a driver, assisted in home health care in Massachusetts, and supported ill sisters.

She is survived by her sisters Maureen Tolson (Martin), Eileen Crimmins (Philip), Bernadette Moran (Michael), her brothers Gerard (Gertrude) and Richard (Mary Locke), sister-in-law Ethel Fowkes, and other community members.

A wake is scheduled for December 10 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Nazareth, Kentucky. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on December 11 at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial in Nazareth Cemetery.

Sympathy expressions can be sent to the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth's Office of Mission Advancement. The Mass will be available via livestream on nazareth.org/live.
