Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
Pope Francis has announced the upcoming canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, scheduled for 2025. This decision has been met with enthusiasm by Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez, who expressed his joy in a recent statement.
Archbishop Pérez highlighted the significance of this event for the Universal Church and young Catholics worldwide. He noted that "Blessed Carlo will be the first saint from the Millennial Generation," while "Blessed Pier Giorgio is a model of Missionary Discipleship for young adults."
Blessed Carlo Acutis, who passed away in 2016 at age 15, is recognized for his use of technology to evangelize and his devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist. Meanwhile, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died in 1925 at age 24, is celebrated for his commitment to serving the poor alongside his academic pursuits and social activism.
The archbishop emphasized that both individuals serve as inspirations for today's youth to live their Catholic faith with courage and compassion. He shared a personal connection with Blessed Carlo's legacy through an event where Antonia Salvano Acutis, Carlo's mother, spoke about her son's dedication at a local Eucharistic Congress.
Archbishop Pérez concluded with a prayerful hope that these new saints will inspire young people to serve others following Christ's example. He encouraged all Catholics to join him in rejoicing over this significant development within the Church.
"Blessed Carlo and Blessed Pier Giorgio pray for us!" he added.
Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez serves as the Archbishop of Philadelphia.
