The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has decided to end its partnership with the Girl Scouts. This decision was made after discussions with the archdiocesan Presbyteral Council and Deans, as well as recommendations from key leaders within the archdiocese. Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr communicated this decision in a letter addressed to members of the church.
In his letter, Archbishop Schnurr acknowledged the positive aspects of scouting, describing it as a program that "builds virtue, discipline and community," and helps form responsible citizens. He also expressed gratitude towards those who have served as scout leaders in integrating traditional scouting values into youth ministry.
However, concerns were raised about recent directions taken by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA). According to Archbishop Schnurr, GSUSA has promoted views on gender and sexuality that conflict with Catholic teachings. He stated that "the Archdiocese of Cincinnati cannot partner with an organization that, from its highest level, advocates ideas which the Church considers false and harmful."
Archbishop Schnurr emphasized that this decision followed extensive research and discussions with Girl Scouts of Western Ohio over two years but no agreeable solution was found.
The transition away from Girl Scouts will take place over 14 months. By the end of 2025, existing troops must either convert to American Heritage Girls troops, relocate meetings off Catholic campuses or disband altogether. In addition, new Girl Scout troops will not be allowed on Catholic premises during this period.
Despite this development, Archbishop Schnurr conveyed respect for those involved in scouting leadership roles: "Your mentorship has made a difference in the lives of many and I am very grateful for your service."
He concluded by inviting prayers for cultural renewal through faith: "Please join me in praying for the renewal of our culture and country through the good news of Jesus Christ."
