Dr. John Senior, a professor of classics at the University of Kansas, left a lasting impact on his students through his role in the Integrated Humanities Program (IHP). This two-year course for freshmen and sophomores was team-taught by Dr. Senior alongside Dr. Dennis Quinn and Dr. Franklyn Nelick.
Among these educators, Dr. Senior stood out to many, including one student who eventually asked him to be his godfather upon converting to Roman Catholicism. "He was a father, a wise counselor, a friend, and a mentor to several generations of college students," recalled the former student.
Known for his gentle demeanor and contemplative nature, Dr. Senior captivated students with his voice and deep understanding of literature. His teaching style was more experiential than didactic, encouraging students to think deeply about their readings and life experiences.
A fellow student described him as having "the uncanny ability to get young people to think, to wonder, and to change course in midstream." Dr. Senior likened his role as an educator to that of a janitor opening doors for students.
Throughout his career, he emphasized seeing the universal in the particular and finding beauty in everyday life. He inspired students to look beyond the ordinary and see the world with what he called a sacramental imagination.
Dr. John Senior's influence continues to resonate with those who had the opportunity to learn from him decades ago.
