Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville

Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre presided over the annual Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Assumption, where he blessed the oils and consecrated the sacred chrism for the upcoming year. During the Mass, Archbishop Fabre shared insights on the significance of sacramental oils, highlighting their symbolism and connection to healing and anointing.

In his homily, Archbishop Fabre emphasized the importance of anointing with sacramental oils, stating, “Anointing, in Biblical and other ancient symbolism, is rich in meaning: oil is a sign of abundance and joy; it cleanses and limbers; oil is a sign of healing, since it is soothing to bruises and wounds; and it makes radiant with beauty, health, and strength.” He further conveyed the message that anointing with these oils signifies being chosen, healed, comforted, and given a mission by God.

Expressing gratitude towards the priests of the Archdiocese of Louisville, Archbishop Fabre acknowledged their dedication and service to the community. He thanked the priests for their various roles and responsibilities, saying, “I am deeply grateful for each of you and for your priestly ministry. I am thankful for your celebrations of the Eucharist, for the confessions you hear and the absolution you provide, for the baptisms you celebrate, and the marriage vows that you witness.”

During the Chrism Mass, Archbishop Fabre recognized the priests’ commitment beyond their sacramental duties, appreciating their efforts in attending to everyday tasks such as parish management, maintenance, and providing comfort to those in need. He expressed gratitude for their sacrifices and selfless service, acknowledging the multiple ways in which priests serve the community.

The Mass culminated with the priests renewing their priestly promises and the consecration of sacramental oils that will be used in various parish ceremonies throughout the year. The event served as a moment of reflection, appreciation, and recommitment for the priests of the Archdiocese of Louisville under the leadership of Archbishop Fabre.
