219 Candidates and 157 Catechumens will be receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil Mass in the Diocese of Tucson. According to Sister Lois Paha, O.P., Director of Pastoral Services, these individuals have been preparing to become new members of the Catholic Church throughout Lent.

The Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion ceremonies have been significant milestones for these candidates and catechumens. Sister Lois Paha explains that the Rite of Election is for those preparing to receive the Sacraments at Easter, while the Call to Continuing Conversion is for those already baptized who will profess their faith. The catechumens are declared "the elect" during the Rite of Election, while the baptized candidates are preparing for full communion in the Roman Catholic Church.

Bishop Edward Weisenburger highlighted the importance of God's call in his homily, quoting Jesus' words from the Gospel of John, "It is not you who chose me, it is I who chose you!" Each individual's journey of conversion is unique, showcasing the love of God for the human community.

As the community comes together to support these individuals on their faith journey, prayers are offered for the catechumens, candidates, teachers, godparents, sponsors, and the entire community. It is a time of unity and growth in charity as everyone prepares to celebrate the Easter Vigil Mass and the reception of these Sacraments.

Let us keep the 219 Candidates and 157 Catechumens in our prayers during Holy Week as they approach this significant moment in their spiritual lives.
