St. John’s University mourns the passing of Joseph M. Mattone, Sr. '53C, '55L, '94HON, a distinguished alumnus, philanthropist, and patriarch of the Mattone family. In a statement, Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President of the university, expressed, "St. John’s University and metropolitan New York have lost a cherished son and torchbearer for the transformative power of the St. John’s experience."

Describing Mr. Mattone's legacy, Rev. Shanley added, "While his earthly light is extinguished, his impactful legacy burns bright and warms the beloved Mattone family and the extended family of St. John’s." Throughout his 92 years, Mr. Mattone was known for envisioning the hidden potential in people and property, helping develop individuals and communities to their fullest capacity.

Born in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn in 1931, Mr. Mattone was the last of nine children and credited his strong work ethic to his immigrant family experience. He attended St. John’s University, where he met his first love, Irene Ficarra, and later married Mary Ann Pessolano. Reverend Bernard M. Tracey, C.M. ’70C, a longtime friend, remarked, "The impact and contributions of Joe Mattone and his extended and beloved family is immeasurable."

Mr. Mattone's career spanned from legal counsel to successful real estate development, with a focus on providing economic opportunities in working-class neighborhoods. His company, Mattone Investors, LLC, has acquired and developed a substantial real estate portfolio in the New York metropolitan area.

A prominent figure in philanthropy and politics, Mr. Mattone was dedicated to supporting charitable causes and championing the underprivileged. His commitment to St. John’s University was unwavering, reflected in his generous donations and establishment of the Mattone Family Institute for Real Estate Law.

Recognized numerous times by his alma mater, Mr. Mattone received prestigious awards such as the President’s Medal, Medal of Honor, and an honorary Doctor of Law degree. Michael X. Mattone ’91L, his son and current Board of Trustees member, honored his father's legacy by stating, "Whatever service I have done, and will do, is a simple reflection of what I have experienced by being around this man."

Funeral services for Joseph M. Mattone, Sr. will be held at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston on March 25 and 26, with a funeral mass at St. Thomas More Church on March 27. The legacy of Mr. Mattone will continue to impact countless lives, both locally and globally, for years to come.
