Carmelite Sister Martha of Christ, formerly known as Susan Frances Showalter, passed away on December 5 at the age of 82. Sister Martha had devoted 64 years of her life to her religious vocation as a member of the Carmelite Sisters of Louisville.
She joined the order on December 8, 1959, and made her first vows on December 11, 1961, followed by her solemn vows on December 11, 1964. Throughout her years of service, Sister Martha dedicated herself to a life of prayer and served as the cook for her community.
In 2015, Sister Martha relocated to Nazareth Home Clifton, where she actively participated in numerous activities and extended invitations to fellow residents to join in. She provided support and comfort to her fellow residents during challenging times, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to her community.
Sister Martha's legacy extends beyond her religious life. She is survived by her brother Richard Showalter of Louisville, her sister Jean Keefe of Virginia, her brother-in-law Peter Thomas of Louisville, several nieces and nephews, and her companion in Carmelite life, Sister Mary Grace D’Annunzio.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held at Nazareth Home Clifton, followed by her burial in the Carmelite Cemetery. Those wishing to express their condolences may send their messages to the Carmelite Sisters at 1907 Lauderdale Road, #1, Louisville, KY, 40205.
