The Catholic Communication Campaign, which spreads the Gospel through various media platforms, will have a special collection in many Catholic dioceses on the weekend of Saturday, May 20, and Sunday, May 21.
The Catholic Communication Campaign provides assistance to media outlets that facilitate a connection between the faithful and Christ.
“The bishops use your gifts to provide these resources because Catholics deserve to hear what the Church teaches and does firsthand,” Atlanta Archbishop Gregory John Hartmayer said, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). “You should have the opportunity to learn from sources that are as committed as you are to our shared faith.”
The funds raised will support media efforts of the USCCB, local dioceses in the U.S. and communication initiatives in developing countries.
The Catholic Communication Campaign awarded over $3.62 million in national and international grants in 2022. The majority of the grants were for evangelization through the bishops' media efforts, while the Rome bureau of the Catholic News Service received funding for coverage of the Vatican. Other areas of funding included digital communications, Catholic media in developing nations and more. Half of the funds collected in each diocese remained there to support local communication outreach efforts, according to the USCCB.
Hartmayer highlighted the work of the USCCB in receiving grants from the Catholic Communication Campaign. Specifically, he mentioned the Rome bureau of the Catholic News Service, which provides daily news coverage of the Vatican and the pope, a weekly news show and podcast called "Catholic Current," and short daily video reflections that provide insights on daily Mass readings.
Most dioceses will take a second collection that is specifically for this cause. While the May 20 to 21 time frame has been selected as the main one, some churches might choose a different date in an effort to accommodate local activities. #iGiveCatholicTogether also accepts funds for the collection.
