The St. Ann Church as well as the National Shrine will be offering catacomb tours this weekend in replicas of the Roman Catacombs which early Christians hid inside from persecutors and where they were buried. The event is called “Journey Through the Catacombs."

The event will be held on Oct. 30 from 5 to 6 p.m. and Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Check out this really awesome event going on at St. Ann Church and National Shrine this weekend. It’s a great way to get into the spirit of Halloween as we witness faith in culture,” the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans posted on Facebook.

The catacombs designed for the tour are replicas of the Roman Catacombs which were built between the 2nd and 5th centuries. Jews, pagan citizens and the first Christians of Rome were buried in the catacombs, according to Facebook.

St. Ann, the mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus, is the name of the Metairie parish, which has been designated as the National Shrine since 1973 by Archbishop Philip M. Hannan, according to the St. Ann’s parish.

On Oct. 31, Mass will be celebrated at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The parish will also offer Mass at 4 p.m. The schedule for Solemnity of All Saints will be at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., as well as 5 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 1.
