Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville

Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre delivered a powerful message to deacons and their wives gathered at the Cathedral of the Assumption in downtown Louisville. The occasion was the National Association of Diaconate Directors convention, where close to 80 diaconate directors from the U.S. and Canada had assembled to participate in workshops and presentations.

In his keynote address, Archbishop Fabre emphasized the vital role of deacons as bearers of the Good News of Jesus Christ. He described their mission as being "heralds of the good news" and highlighted the significance of the Book of the Gospels presented to them during their ordination.

Addressing the deacons, Archbishop Fabre stressed the importance of living out their faith and teachings, saying, "Jesus has entrusted to us the task of teaching about heavenly things, about the good news that he came to proclaim." He reminded them of the transformative power of the resurrection, urging them to emulate the faith and courage of biblical figures like Mary Magdalene, Peter, John, and Thomas.

The Archbishop acknowledged the challenges that come with being heralds of good news, noting that it requires a selfless dedication and a reliance on the strength of Jesus Christ. He encouraged the deacons to never doubt the impact of their ministry and to steadfastly believe in the Lord's work through them.

The National Association of Diaconate Directors, through events like the convention, continues to provide resources for the formation and ministry of Catholic deacons. Archbishop Fabre's words served as a reminder of the sacred calling and responsibilities that deacons carry in spreading the message of Christ's love and salvation.
