Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop | Diocese of Honolulu
The bishop delivered a homily for the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, focusing on the responsibilities that come with Confirmation. The bishop addressed those present, suggesting an unexpected scenario where a Confirmation candidate might be asked to preach, noting it could induce nervousness.
The bishop emphasized that while he was delivering the sermon at this Mass, everyone receiving Confirmation was being commissioned to spread the Gospel. He highlighted various everyday situations where individuals can embody and share Jesus Christ's teachings through actions rather than words.
"Preaching the Gospel in church is important," stated the bishop, adding that its true purpose is to inspire listeners to become preachers of the Gospel themselves. This includes showing love and mercy as taught by Jesus.
Reflecting on Jesus' ascension into heaven, the bishop explained it allowed Jesus to empower his followers by sending them the Holy Spirit. "This Holy Spirit, which you will receive in the sacrament of Confirmation, marks and seals you as one chosen by God," he said.
Furthermore, those confirmed would partake in Holy Communion for the first time. The bishop expressed that through this sacrament, Jesus aims to live within each individual and integrate them into his living Body, allowing his presence beyond physical limitations.
He concluded by urging those being confirmed not to be disappointed once their ceremony ends but instead recognize their calling to preach love and good news wherever they go. "It is the same Jesus who sends you out to be a preacher of the Good News of his love wherever you go!" he declared.
