A seminarian from the Archdiocese of Louisville, Evrard Muhoza, took a significant step towards becoming a priest by being ordained to the transitional diaconate. The ordination was conducted by Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre at the Cathedral of the Assumption on April 26, amid several pre-Derby events that had drawn road closures and traffic.

Deacon Muhoza, who studies at St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, joined the ranks of transitional deacons who are in the final stage of their formation for the priesthood. The ceremony attracted a diverse gathering, including local clergy, seminarians from other regions, the Burundi Catholic community, and the deacon's family and friends.

The Mass featured traditional hymns in Kirundi, Deacon Muhoza's native language, and a special gift presentation. Following a customary Burundian practice, baskets of food meant for the needy were donated to the Cathedral Lunch Program and the Catholic Enrichment Center Food Pantry, alongside the bread and wine for Communion. These items were carried by Deacon Muhoza’s family, with his parents presenting the key sacramental elements.

During his homily, Archbishop Fabre emphasized that through the deacons' ministry, Jesus remains present with his followers. "Through the ministry of deacons, configured to Jesus Christ the Servant through ordination, Jesus fulfills his promise to be with us," he said. He also spoke about the transformational journey Deacon Muhoza was about to embark on, filled with new promises and commitments such as celibacy and obedience.

Archbishop Fabre provided personal remarks to Deacon Muhoza, highlighting the spiritual changes he would undergo with the Holy Spirit's blessing. “Evrard, in just a few moments, divine grace will transform you through ordination. The Holy Spirit will descend upon you, forever changing your life,” he stated.

After the ordination, Deacon Muhoza took an active role in the Mass by aiding in altar preparation and raising the chalice during the Eucharistic Prayer.
