Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
The Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence (DGDP), affiliated with the Developmental Programs Division of Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, are set to commence their annual Challenger Wiffle Ball League. This league was established in 1997 by Mr. Jim Gula and the late Mr. Robert Neely with the aim of providing residents of DGDP the opportunity to engage in baseball. The league took inspiration from the Little League Challenger Division, an adaptive baseball program created in 1989 for those with physical and intellectual disabilities.
The season's inaugural event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Monsignor Kelly Community Center of Saint Pius X Parish, located at 220 South Lawrence Road, Broomall, PA 19008.
The event is expected to see over 50 participants and volunteers, including individuals from the DGDP, students from Cardinal O'Hara High School’s Community Service Corps, and Father Dennis M. Weber, SdC., who serves as the Director of Ministry and Mission for the Developmental Programs Division of Catholic Social Services. Additionally, members of the Gula family will be present.
The Challenger League games will occur weekly at the same venue, with the season concluding on Wednesday, May 28th.
The Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence are committed to enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities. They offer a range of programs that include community and campus-based living arrangements, life sharing through family living, respite care, and day programs.
